About this position

This PhD opportunity at the University of Leeds focuses on advancing the sustainable development of offshore windfarms by reducing uncertainties in ground modeling through the use of Quaternary outcrop analogues. Offshore wind energy is expanding rapidly, especially in the North Sea and Irish Sea, where complex Quaternary stratigraphy presents significant challenges for array design and cable route planning. The project aims to integrate geotechnical and geological datasets to build robust ground models, leveraging onshore analogues to better understand subsurface heterogeneity and physical properties such as sediment strength and compressibility.

As a PhD candidate, you will review the Quaternary geological histories of key regions, identify and visit suitable onshore outcrop analogues (e.g., the northern Isle of Man), and collect tectono-stratigraphic and geotechnical datasets. These data will be used to construct 3D geological and geotechnical models that inform offshore windfarm design. You will collaborate with industry partners in the Geoscience and Offshore Wind Joint Industry Partnership (JIP), sharing findings to influence ground modeling workflows and directly support the business needs of offshore wind operators.

The project is part of the YES-DTN studentship program, which offers full funding including university fees, a personal stipend, and research/training costs. While applications are open to both UK and international candidates, the number of awards for international applicants is limited by UKRI rules, and international students must cover visa and health surcharge costs. The position is based in the School of Earth & Environment at the University of Leeds, providing access to cutting-edge research facilities and a collaborative academic environment.
