Two graduate positions (PhD or MSc) are available in the Department of Biology at Wilfrid Laurier University, supervised by Professor Jennifer Baltzer in the Forest Ecology Research Group. The group focuses on the impacts of global change on forest ecosystems, with research spanning boreal wildfire ecology, permafrost, and northern water resources.

Position 1 investigates the retention of fire retardant in northern ecosystems and its effects on terrestrial and aquatic communities, with a focus on the Northwest Territories. This research is crucial for understanding how fire management practices, such as the use of flame retardants, influence soil salinization, nutrient enrichment, and the health of country foods in northern Canada.

Position 2 aims to improve soil health and agricultural yield using cover crops in the Northwest Territories. The project addresses the challenges and opportunities of developing sustainable agriculture in a changing climate, with implications for food security and carbon emissions reduction in remote northern communities.
