The group specializes in High Energy Surface X-ray Diffraction (HESXRD) and gas phase X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) to study surface structure and chemistry, enabling knowledge-based design of efficient catalysts.
This project leverages the European Spallation Source (ESS), the world's most brilliant neutron source, to advance material science investigations. The postdoc will employ neutron-based diffraction techniques and develop electrochemical sample environments for ESS, aiming to elucidate the relationship between electrocatalyst surface activity and atomic-scale properties. The research is funded by the Chalmers Materials Science Area of Advance, facilitating collaboration with multiple departments and research groups.
Key research themes include renewable energy systems, electrocatalytic water splitting for hydrogen production, and the development of novel electrocatalyst materials to replace rare and costly noble metals. The project focuses on transition metals, particularly cobalt-iron alloys, investigating iron diffusion in cobalt-based catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction using neutron reflectometry and diffraction at large-scale facilities such as Institut-Laue-Langevin (ILL) and ESS. The postdoc will design and implement an electrochemical cell for neutron studies, collaborate with ESS beamlines ESTIA and SKADI, and access state-of-the-art material characterization techniques at Chalmers. Participation in diffraction and spectroscopy beamtimes at European synchrotron facilities (MAX IV, Petra III, ESRF) is expected.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or equivalent, with strong hands-on experience in electrochemistry and/or electrocatalysis. Additional desirable skills include experience with large-scale facility experiments, neutron-based techniques, beamtime application writing, complementary analytical methods, high-vacuum systems, physical vapour deposition, scripting for data analysis, and a strong publication record. The position involves research, equipment design, supervision of students, and offers excellent prospects for future roles in academia, industry, or the public sector.
The postdoc position is a fully funded, full-time employment for two years, requiring physical presence in Gothenburg.
