About this position
Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg, Sweden, invites applications for a postdoctoral position in Grey-Box Modeling of Multiphase Flows. This opportunity is hosted by the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, within a research group dedicated to advancing multiphase flow and separation science to accelerate industrial innovation and implementation. The project focuses on developing advanced grey-box modeling frameworks for multiphase flow systems, integrating mechanistic, multi-scale flow models with data-driven inference and uncertainty quantification. The research emphasizes methodological innovation, scalable algorithms, and translation to industrially relevant multiphase reactors and separation processes, aiming for high-impact publications and intellectual leadership.
As a postdoc, you will develop grey-box models that combine first-principles multiphase flow descriptions with data-driven components, formulate and implement parameter estimation and system identification methods, and integrate experimental, pilot-scale, or high-fidelity simulation data into model calibration and validation workflows. You will design and run numerical simulations of multiphase flow systems and reactors, quantify model uncertainty and predictive confidence, and compare grey-box models against purely mechanistic and purely data-driven approaches. Optimizing model performance for computational efficiency and robustness, as well as documenting, publishing, and presenting research results, are key responsibilities.
The position is a temporary full-time employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Physical presence in Sweden is required throughout the employment, and a valid residence permit must be presented by the start date. Chalmers offers a dynamic and inspiring working environment in Gothenburg, with generous employee benefits including healthcare, parental leave, subsidized day care, and free schools. The university is committed to gender balance and equality, and offers Swedish language courses for international staff.
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree or an equivalent foreign degree in chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied mathematics, or a closely related field, obtained no later than the time the employment decision is made. Preference is given to candidates who have obtained their doctoral degree within the last three years prior to the application deadline. Applications must be submitted in English and include a comprehensive CV, personal letter, and relevant research outcomes. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. Contact details to references will be requested after the interview.
The application deadline is 28 February 2026. For questions, contact Professor Jia Wei Chew at [email protected]. For more information and to apply, visit the official application link provided. Chalmers University of Technology is renowned for its research and education in technology and natural sciences, fostering innovation and sustainability in close collaboration with society.
