The Experimental Quantum Engineering (EQE) group at ETH Zürich and the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join their cutting-edge research at the interface of quantum optics, quantum information science, and quantum many-body physics. Led by Prof. Dr. Wenchao Xu, the EQE group pioneers programmable quantum systems based on neutral atoms and Rydberg interactions, advancing both fundamental quantum science and next-generation quantum technologies.
Current research in the group focuses on building and exploiting hybrid quantum systems with individually controlled atoms and atomic ensembles. Key directions include scalable architectures for fault-tolerant quantum information processing, rapid quantum non-demolition readout, strong atom–light interfaces for quantum interconnects, and the study of non-equilibrium quantum many-body dynamics in programmable atom arrays.
The successful postdoctoral candidate will contribute to a new experimental platform based on dual-type tweezer atom arrays. The project aims to demonstrate reconfigurable local quantum control, rapid non-demolition state detection of single- and multi-qubit states, and explore novel quantum dynamics arising from measurement interplay. Responsibilities include designing, building, and operating state-of-the-art neutral-atom experiments, developing novel quantum control and measurement protocols, leading research projects, mentoring students, and collaborating with researchers at ETH Zürich, PSI, and international partners.
Applicants should hold a PhD in physics or a related field, with a strong background in experimental AMO physics or quantum optics. Experience with cold atoms, optical tweezers, lasers, or quantum control techniques is highly desirable. Applicants must hold a PhD in physics or a related field. A strong background in experimental atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics or quantum optics is required. Experience with cold atoms, optical tweezers, lasers, or quantum control techniques is highly desirable. Candidates should demonstrate a strong interest in neutral-atom quantum technologies and many-body quantum physics, possess the ability to work both independently and collaboratively, and have good communication skills in English (German is a plus).
