About this position

Empa, a leading research institution within the ETH Domain in Switzerland, is offering a PostDoc position focused on the development of a hybrid additive manufacturing (AM) process for silicon carbide (SiC)-based ceramic metamaterials. This applied research project is a collaboration between the Smart Materials Processing and Architectured Materials groups, aiming to advance the design, fabrication, and characterization of 3D-printed SiC-based metamaterials.

The project will involve the development of SiC-based thermoplastic feedstocks, implementation of a hybrid manufacturing process that combines FDM 3D printing and milling, and the creation of metamaterials with unique mechanical and thermal properties. Key tasks include exploring commercial SiC ceramic powders and sintering additives, programming and optimizing a hybrid FDM printing machine, modeling and optimizing the debinding process, and simulation-based design of mechanical metamaterials to achieve high specific stiffness, strength, energy dissipation, and damage resistance. The role also includes morphological, microstructural, and mechanical characterization of the 3D-printed structures.

Applicants should possess a PhD in mechanical engineering, ceramics, or a related field, with prior experience in processing and sintering SiC-based ceramics, microstructural and mechanical characterization, machine programming, and modeling/simulation using tools such as Ansys, Abaqus, or Comsol. Strong experimental skills are essential, as is the ability to modify and program the hybrid printer for advanced printing and milling. Candidates must demonstrate personal responsibility, excellence, flexibility, and teamwork, along with excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Knowledge of German is beneficial but not mandatory.

Empa offers a one-year PostDoc position with the possibility of extension based on project outcomes. The institution provides excellent infrastructure and opportunities for personal and professional development, fostering a culture of inclusion and respect. The position is set to start in April 2026 or upon mutual agreement.

Interested candidates should submit a complete online application, including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas, and contact details of two reference persons, exclusively via the Empa job portal. Applications sent by email or post will not be considered. For more information and to apply, visit the provided application link.
