Postdoctoral Appointment in Sociology – Changing Northern Landscapes Project Karlstad University in Sweden

Karlstad University invites applications for a postdoctoral appointment in sociology, focusing on the interdisciplinary research project “Changing Northern Landscapes: Forestry and Reindeer Husbandry in Sweden.” This two-year, full-time position is based in the Department of Social and Psychological Studies, within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The project investigates the power dynamics and interactions between the forestry industry and Sámi reindeer herding in northern Sweden, employing interdisciplinary perspectives and Indigenous feminist methodologies. The research aims to analyze conflicts, collaboration, and the policy-practice gap, ultimately contributing to more sustainable forestry and equitable collaboration with Indigenous communities.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant, multidisciplinary team and work closely with colleagues from Karlstad University, Umeå University, and external partners. The role is research-focused, with responsibilities including planning and conducting qualitative research, data collection and analysis, and dissemination of findings through scientific publications and conferences. The postdoctoral fellow will be expected to lead at least two scientific articles as first author and actively participate in the academic environment, including seminars and collaborative project development. Up to 20% teaching may be included.

Applicants must have completed a PhD in sociology or a closely related field (such as human geography, political science, Sámi studies, or gender studies with sociological theory) within the last three years, with exceptions for special circumstances. Proficiency in both Swedish and English is required, as research activities and communication occur in both languages. Candidates should demonstrate strong qualitative research skills, particularly in advanced interview studies, and possess the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Experience with Indigenous studies, feminist methodology, ethnographic approaches, and university-level teaching are considered assets.
