About this position
The Khalifa Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (KCGEB) at United Arab Emirates University is offering a postdoctoral fellowship in Biology, with a focus on molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, and ecology. The research centers on the red palm weevil (RPW), Rhynchophorus ferrugineus, a major invasive pest affecting trees globally. The postdoc will lead experiments and develop Wolbachia-based biocontrol strategies to suppress RPW populations in laboratory and semi-field conditions. Key responsibilities include identifying and expanding Wolbachia stock cultures from donor insects, microinjection and transinfection into RPW, and evaluating cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI) effects. The project aims to achieve transgenic expression of cif genes for a gene-drive system in RPW, contributing to sustainable pest management and reducing insecticide use.
Applicants must have a PhD in Biology (Animal Science-Entomology) or Life Sciences, with a strong publication and patent record. Experience in molecular biology, genetics, microbiology, and ecology is essential. Preferred candidates will have expertise in insect-Wolbachia models, incompatible insect technique (IIT), insect cell culture, and basic bioinformatics. Experience with red palm weevil or mosquito-Wolbachia research is highly advantageous. The postdoc will participate in multiple ongoing projects at KCGEB, including gene editing, RNAi, chemical ecology, and synthetic biology research.
Salary is based on qualifications and experience. The application requires a CV, PDFs of relevant publications, and a cover letter outlining research interests and plans. The deadline for applications is March 31, 2026. For more details and to apply, visit the UAEU job portal.
