This postdoctoral position at the University of Rouen Normandy offers an exciting opportunity to join the InnovFluor3.0 project, funded by the Normandy Regional Council and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The research will be conducted within the CARMeN institute (UMR6064) and the SMS laboratory (UR3233), focusing on the advanced analysis of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in environmental matrices such as soils and waters.
PFAS are a large family of synthetic fluorinated compounds known for their persistence, mobility, and potential toxicity, making them priority contaminants for environmental and health agencies. Despite their widespread use since the 1950s, only a small fraction of PFAS have validated analytical standards, leaving the majority unidentified and unregulated. This project aims to address these analytical challenges by developing and applying advanced techniques, including ion chromatography (IC) coupled with mass spectrometry (MS), liquid chromatography-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LC-ICP/MS), and IC-combustion for total fluorine quantification. The research will also involve the selective detection of fluorinated species using BaF+ complex formation and comparison with results from GC×GC-HRMS, TIMS-FTICR, and LC-MS/MS, in collaboration with other postdoctoral fellows.
The position is full-time (35 hours per week) for 18 months, starting in June 2026, and offers a net monthly salary of 2400 euros. The successful candidate will work in a multidisciplinary team, contributing to the comprehensive analysis of PFAS and their transformation products in environmental samples. The CARMeN laboratory is a restricted area (ZRR), and final recruitment is subject to security clearance.
Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in analytical chemistry, with strong expertise in chromatography and mass spectrometry. Proficiency in French or English is required, along with excellent writing and oral presentation skills in English. Teamwork and collaboration are essential, as the project involves four postdoctoral fellows working on shared samples using different analytical techniques. Candidates should have 1-4 years of research experience in analytical chemistry.
