About this position

Utrecht University is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join a major research project focused on the simulation of coastal plastic pollution. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of oceanography, fluid dynamics, and applied mathematics, developing simulations using the Parcels-code.org Lagrangian framework. Responsibilities include setting up hydrodynamic coastal flow fields (using models such as SWAN, SWASH, or SCHISM), writing Python code to simulate the transport of macroplastic particles, analyzing dispersion patterns, and comparing simulation results with experimental data from floating trackers. Collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, including other postdocs and PhD candidates, is central to the role.

Applicants should hold a PhD in fluid dynamics, oceanography, physics, applied mathematics, or a related field, and possess strong Python programming skills. Affinity with coastal simulations, motivation to work in a diverse team, and excellent English communication skills are required. Experience in physical oceanography is preferred.
