The BRICONS Project – Building Resilient Irish Coasts through Oyster Restoration – is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Research Fellow (PD1 level) to join an interdisciplinary research team at University College Dublin. The project, funded by the Marine Institute under the Marine Research Programme, explores the restoration of native oyster reefs as a nature-based solution to enhance marine biodiversity, ecosystem services, and coastal resilience in the face of climate change.

The successful candidate will coordinate and deliver field-based oyster restoration research, focusing on Dublin Bay and collaborating with partner sites in Galway and Belfast. Responsibilities include environmental monitoring, habitat characterisation, biodiversity surveys, and deploying innovative monitoring tools such as underwater video systems and baited cameras. The role also involves procuring and deploying restoration materials (artificial reefs, shell cultch) and supporting the reintroduction and translocation of native oysters in collaboration with project partners and local stakeholders.

This research-focused position supports early-career researchers in developing advanced research skills, publications, funding proposals, and mentoring experience within a vibrant multidisciplinary team. The appointment is for 24 months, with a salary of €46,305 per annum and the possibility of renewal.

Applicants must have a PhD in Marine Ecology or a closely related discipline, strong experience in marine fieldwork and habitat surveys, proficiency in statistical data analysis (R, Python, MATLAB), evidence of research output, and excellent organisational and communication skills. Awareness of equality, diversity, and inclusion principles is required. Desirable qualifications include scientific diving certification, experience with oyster aquaculture, public engagement, stakeholder collaboration, boat handling, marine species identification, and multidisciplinary teamwork.

The successful candidate will join UCD’s School of Biology and Environmental Science and work closely with experts in marine ecology, coastal engineering, data science, and industry.
