About this position

Tampere University is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the Polymer Chemistry and Materials group within the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences. This multidisciplinary team focuses on innovative strategies for polymer synthesis, complex architectures, and sustainable polymers. The group is expanding rapidly and collaborates closely with the Chemistry and Advanced Materials (CAM) sub-unit, which includes eight research groups and around 90 members specializing in chemistry, functional materials, and light-based technologies.

The successful candidate will contribute to a project investigating new photocatalysts for polymer synthesis, with the goal of expanding the range of polymers accessible via photopolymerisation. Depending on expertise, the postdoctoral researcher may focus on synthetic chemistry, spectroscopy, or other relevant areas. Responsibilities include conducting research, training students and postdocs in synthesis and material characterisation, promoting safe laboratory practices, supporting doctoral researchers, and assisting with manuscript preparation, reporting, and grant writing. Some teaching may be involved, and professional development is a shared objective between the researcher and supervisor.

Applicants must hold a PhD in chemistry, materials science, or a closely related field, with a strong background in organic chemistry, polymer chemistry, or photochemistry. Excellent self-management and communication skills, fluency in English, and the ability to work in a diverse environment are required. Experience with Schlenk techniques, chemical structure analysis (NMR, MS), polymer characterisation (SEC, DSC, rheology), 3D printing, or time-resolved spectroscopy is advantageous.

The Faculty offers world-class research infrastructure for polymer chemistry, especially for studies involving light-related phenomena. In 2026, the group will move to new laboratories in the Noodi building, designed for interdisciplinary research. CAM maintains extensive national and international networks, providing excellent opportunities for collaboration and professional growth.

The position is a fixed-term contract for 12 months, with possible extension to 24 months. The monthly personal grant is supplemented by a part-time employment contract, with a combined net income of approximately €3,900 per month.
