The University of Galway invites applications for a full-time, fixed-term postdoctoral researcher position in the School of Computer Science, focusing on artificial intelligence for healthcare. The successful candidate will join the Machine Learning Research Group under the direction of Professor Michael Madden, collaborating with Dr Bairbre McNicholas and Professor John Laffey from the School of Medicine. The position is part of the ICUSafeNotes project, which is embedded within the ARC Hub for HealthTech—a partnership between University of Galway, ATU, and RCSI—aimed at accelerating research breakthroughs into commercial healthcare solutions.

The ICUSafeNotes project centers on the development of multimodal machine learning models for ICU note summarisation and medical data analysis, supporting clinical decision-making in intensive care environments. This builds upon prior research assessing the effectiveness of large language models in querying and summarizing unstructured medical notes, as well as extensive experience in applying machine learning to patient care in intensive care settings. The Machine Learning Research Group is recognized for its theoretical advances in machine learning, motivated by real-world applications in medicine, engineering, and the physical sciences. The group’s philosophy is that important applications drive novel algorithmic development, which in turn enables new applications.

Funding for this position is available from March 2026 to December 2026, with the possibility of a 12-month extension. The postdoctoral salary scale ranges from €46,805 to €59,654 per annum, subject to project funding limitations and pro rata for shorter contracts. New public sector appointments are typically made at the first point of the salary scale, but higher placement may be considered based on prior relevant experience.

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in computer science or a closely related discipline, with expertise in machine learning, artificial intelligence, or data-driven medical applications.
