About this position

The Sustainable Futures Lab at the School of Engineering and Architecture, University College Cork, is offering a fully funded 12-month postdoctoral research position within the 'Environmental Intelligence' project. Led by Professor Marguerite Nyhan, this opportunity is ideal for researchers passionate about advancing the science of sustainable, healthy, and liveable cities. The project leverages large-scale digital datasets, artificial intelligence, and statistical methods to quantify urban environmental metrics such as emissions, air pollution, and greenspace, as well as urban dynamics, with unprecedented accuracy and scale across several cities.

Research outcomes will directly inform urban design, environmental policies, and climate action plans, contributing to the development of future cities that are both sustainable and healthy. The successful candidate will also play a role in developing and delivering research-driven sustainability and climate curriculums and educational resources, supporting the broader impact of the project.

Applicants must hold a PhD in environmental engineering, computer science, data science, or a related discipline. Essential qualifications include significant experience in data analytics, statistics, or urban analytics, as well as excellent communication, organisation, and interpersonal skills. Experience in urban environmental sustainability, policy, and education is advantageous but not mandatory. A record of peer-reviewed journal publications and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team are required. English language proficiency is necessary, and Garda vetting or international police clearance may be part of the selection process.

The position is fully funded for 12 months, covering salary and research expenses. The postdoctoral researcher will conduct a specified programme of research under the supervision of Professor Nyhan, engage in professional development, gain experience in grant writing, disseminate research results, and acquire transferable skills such as project management and postgraduate mentoring. The role also includes supporting Masters and PhD students, administrative duties, and contributing to research grant proposals and financial management.

Applications must be submitted via the University College Cork website by 24 April 2026. For further information, candidates may contact Professor Marguerite Nyhan at [email protected]. The project offers a unique opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge research in environmental intelligence and urban sustainability, within a vibrant academic environment in Cork, Ireland.
