About this position

Tampere University, in collaboration with Tampere University of Applied Sciences, offers a dynamic and multidisciplinary research environment with a strong focus on technology, health, and society. The FAST-Lab, led by Professor Jose L. Martinez Lastra within the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, specializes in the integration of humans and machines/robots to create smart environments by leveraging advances in Information and Communication Technologies.

The lab conducts cutting-edge research in automation, industrial informatics, cyber-physical systems, robotics, and artificial intelligence, with primary applications in factory automation, healthcare automation, and smart mobility. The advertised postdoctoral position centers on AI-driven digital twins and smart planning for Manufacturing-as-a-Service (MaaS). The successful candidate will develop adaptive digital twin frameworks and AI-based smart planners to support dynamic production environments in a MaaS ecosystem.

The research will involve integrating deep reinforcement learning, autonomous agent modeling, and multi-objective optimization to enable predictive simulation, real-time resource management, and intelligent decision-making across distributed manufacturing networks. Key responsibilities include developing digital twins for manufacturing systems, adaptive simulation tools for production change prediction, AI-based smart planners for production planning and maintenance scheduling, and autonomous AI agents and remote interfaces for MaaS consumer-provider interactions.

Applicants must have a PhD in Automation Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a closely related field. Essential skills include strong programming abilities (Python, C++, JavaScript), knowledge of digital twin technologies, simulation platforms, deep reinforcement learning frameworks (such as PyTorch and Tensorflow), multi-agent systems, autonomous agent modeling, and expertise in machine learning and AI. Additional assets include experience in interdisciplinary research, familiarity with smart manufacturing architectures, Industry 4.0, cyber-physical systems, research funding acquisition, and a record of scientific publications in relevant areas. The ability to work effectively in an intercultural and interdisciplinary team is crucial.

The position is full-time and fixed-term until November 30, 2027, with an expected start date in January 2026 or as mutually agreed. The starting salary is approximately 3800-3900 EUR/month, based on the Finnish University Salary System, and includes a comprehensive benefits package such as occupational health care, flexible working hours, sports facilities, and campus discounts. Tampere University is committed to high-level scientific research and offers a supportive, international research community. The city of Tampere is a major academic and industrial hub in Finland, known for its vibrant entrepreneurial community, rich cultural scene, and access to nature.

Applications must be submitted online in English, including a CV (according to TENK guidelines), transcript of studies, and a motivation letter outlining research directions. The application deadline is November 27, 2025. For further information, applicants may contact Project Manager Anne Ala-Heikkilä at [email protected].
