About this position

The University of Rijeka, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Department of History, invites applications for a full-time Postdoctoral Researcher to join the project “Folk Life and Daily Customs of the Northern Adriatic,” funded by the Croatian Science Foundation (UIP-2025-02-8173) and led by PI Kosana Jovanovic. This temporary position offers the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary research at the intersection of cultural anthropology, ethnology, and history, focusing on the rich traditions and daily practices of the Northern Adriatic region.

The successful candidate will contribute to a variety of project activities, including conducting field research, working in archives and libraries, developing an online database, participating in scientific conferences and research workshops, creating the project website, and attending work meetings. The project emphasizes collaboration, methodological rigor, and the dissemination of research findings to both academic and public audiences.

Applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent in a relevant field such as cultural anthropology, ethnology, ancient history, archaeology, art history, local history, medieval history, paleography, political history, or social history. Candidates should demonstrate research experience, familiarity with archival and museum materials, and field research methods. Proficiency in English or Italian (good level) or German (basic level) is advantageous, as are strong computer skills. Applicants must meet the requirements of the Croatian Act on Higher Education and Scientific Activity and provide all necessary documentation, including a signed application, CV, copy of ID, PhD certificate, report on previous scientific, teaching and professional activities, and a list of publications. Those with foreign degrees must secure recognition from the Croatian Agency for Science and Higher Education prior to employment.

The position is based in Rijeka, Croatia, at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, offering a stimulating academic environment and access to regional archives and research resources. Both men and women are encouraged to apply under equal conditions. The application deadline is April 10, 2026, with the anticipated start date of June 1, 2026. Results of the selection process will be published on the Faculty’s official website.
