About this position

The de Duve Institute at Université Catholique de Louvain (UCLouvain) in Brussels is offering a postdoctoral position in molecular and cellular bacteriology, funded by the ERC Consolidator Grant VAMPIRE. The research group led by Professor Géraldine Laloux investigates the molecular factors underlying bacterial prey-predator interactions, focusing on the epibiotic predatory bacterium Bdellovibrio exovorus. This bacterium proliferates by feeding on a bacterial prey while attached to its cell surface, forming a unique junction to access nutrients. The project aims to uncover the molecular mechanisms of this inter-species interaction and feeding strategy, which remain largely unknown.

Using Bdellovibrio exovorus as a model, the research will employ proteomics, structural biology, cell biology, and advanced imaging techniques such as live-cell and cryo-EM microscopy. The project also seeks to develop genetic, imaging, and quantitative predation analysis tools to establish Bdellovibrio exovorus as a model organism for studying bacterial predation. The lab is dynamic, productive, and well-connected nationally and internationally in the field of molecular and cellular bacteriology.

The position offers a 1-year full-time postdoc fellowship, with the possibility of renewal. The fellowship includes a competitive monthly allowance according to the institution's scale, coverage of public transportation in Brussels or train commuting from other Belgian cities, and access to university facilities and activities. Candidates are encouraged to apply for independent fellowships during the first year to secure continued funding.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Microbiology, Bioengineering, Biochemistry, or equivalent, completed between January 2024 and January 2026. Additional eligibility criteria include not having resided, studied, or worked in Belgium for more than 24 months in the past 3 years before the start of the postdoc, and a good command of scientific English. Preferred qualifications include a background in molecular and cellular bacteriology, expertise in bacterial envelope biogenesis, inter-species interactions, cellular junctions, membrane biology, and technical experience in proteomics, biochemistry, bacterial genetics, and microscopy. Familiarity with modern bioinformatic tools is also desirable.

The selection process involves ranking candidates based on their CV and motivation letter, followed by an online interview and a one-day visit for shortlisted candidates. The final selection will be communicated by summer 2026. UCLouvain is the largest university in the French-speaking region of Belgium, with a strong international research community. The de Duve Institute is located on the medical campus in Brussels, offering a vibrant academic environment.
