The University of Jyväskylä’s Department of Social Sciences and Philosophy invites applications for a 3-year fixed-term Postdoctoral Researcher position in Philosophy, beginning January 12, 2026 or as agreed. This role is part of Professor Jari Kaukua’s ISHRAQ project, funded by the Research Council of Finland, which investigates the philosophical legacy of Shihāb al-Dīn al-Suhrawardī from the thirteenth to seventeenth centuries CE and aims to create an online database of Illuminationist texts.
The successful candidate will conduct research on the reception of Suhrawardī’s philosophy among thirteenth-century philosophical and theological authors in the Islamic world. The position requires a completed doctoral degree in Philosophy or a closely related field, as well as sufficient knowledge of classical Arabic to work with untranslated primary sources. Proficiency in English is essential, and a strong academic record is considered an advantage. The appointment is subject to University of Jyväskylä regulations and language guidelines, and a six-month trial period applies.
Salary is determined by the university’s salary system (level 5 for teaching and research staff), with a gross monthly range of approximately 3500–4000 EUR, depending on qualifications and experience. The university also offers a settling-in allowance to support relocation to Jyväskylä.
