Ghent University invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Physics and Astronomy (Fysica en Sterrenkunde), focusing on the theoretical modeling of supernovae. This position is part of the ERC starting grant project Star-Grasp, led by Prof. Pablo Marchant, and will be conducted in close collaboration with Prof. Takashi Moriya from the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan. The research aims to advance our understanding of the physics behind the formation of gravitational wave sources by studying intermediate evolutionary stages, constrained through electromagnetic observations.
The successful candidate will join the stellar astrophysics group and be responsible for developing and computing state-of-the-art models of pulsational pair-instability supernovae. The work will utilize a novel stellar evolution code under development at Ghent University, with a significant emphasis on code development to produce multi-color light curves of supernovae in 1D simulations. These simulations will incorporate critical physics such as nucleosynthesis and convection in the stellar core, essential for accurate modeling of pair-instability phenomena. The research outcomes will be contextualized with observed black hole mass spectra in gravitational wave sources and the identification of (pulsational) pair-instability supernovae in ongoing transient surveys.
At least 80% of the assignment will be dedicated to academic research, including the development of methods and simulations involving radiative transfer hydrodynamics in 1D stellar evolution. The role may also involve (co-)supervision of MSc and PhD students and supporting departmental teaching activities.
Applicants must hold a thesis-based doctorate (PhD) obtained within the last 6 years, preferably in astrophysics or physics. Candidates who have not yet completed their doctorate must possess the degree by the start date. Experience in theoretical stellar astrophysics, radiative transfer in stellar atmospheres, or theoretical modeling of supernovae is highly valued. The appointment is for a contract of indefinite duration with a maximum term of 3 years, starting no earlier than September 1, 2026.
