About this position

The University of Turku, a leading multidisciplinary research university in Finland, is seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher or Research Assistant for a fixed-term position in the field of Semiconductor Interface Engineering. The successful candidate will join the Materials Informatics Laboratory group led by Professor Milica Todorović, working on a collaborative project with Comptek Solutions, a semiconductor wafer manufacturer.

The project focuses on improving semiconductor manufacturing by applying artificial intelligence (AI) and first-principles simulations to study and optimize interfaces between semiconductor layers in industrial devices. The research involves deploying AI-driven interface structure search techniques to identify atomistic arrangements and electronic contacts, which will inform multi-scale models of entire semiconductor devices. The position offers a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of materials science, computational physics, chemistry, and AI, with tasks and responsibilities tailored to the candidate's academic experience.

Candidates with degrees in physics, materials science, chemistry, or engineering who are passionate about data science and applied AI in natural sciences are encouraged to apply. Prior experience with materials simulations, coding, and AI is advantageous. The group values creative thinking, programming skills, and a broad understanding of electronic structure and material properties.

The position also appreciates candidates willing to travel, teach, mentor, and collaborate in a diverse and inclusive environment. The Materials Informatics Laboratory is a multicultural, cross-disciplinary team that combines electronic structure simulations and machine learning for innovative applications in future technologies, health, and climate. The University of Turku provides excellent support for international hires, including orientation and relocation assistance. The contract is for 6 months, starting on 1 January 2026 or as agreed, with a salary commensurate with qualifications and experience: approximately 3500 €/month for postdoctoral researchers, 2500-3100 €/month for project researchers, and 2200–2400 €/month for research assistants.

Applicants must submit their application in English by 26 November 2025, including a motivation letter, CV, degree certificates and transcripts, and contact details of at least two referees. The position will be filled as soon as a suitable candidate is identified. For further information, contact Professor Milica Todorović at [email protected].
