About this position
The University of Turku, a leading multidisciplinary research university in Finland, is seeking a postdoctoral researcher or research assistant to join the Materials Informatics Laboratory led by Professor Milica Todorović. The position is part of a collaborative Tandem Industry-Academia project with Comptek Solutions, a semiconductor wafer manufacturer. The research focuses on improving semiconductor interfaces using artificial intelligence (AI) tools and ab initio simulations to study the interfaces between semiconductor layers within devices produced by Comptek Solutions.
The project employs AI-assisted methods to identify atomic and electronic structures at solid-solid interfaces, with the resulting information used to build large-scale models of semiconductor devices. The contract is shared between academic and industrial partners, offering a unique opportunity to work at the intersection of academia and industry. The ideal candidate will have a background in physics, chemistry, materials science, or engineering, and a keen interest in applying machine learning to natural sciences.
Experience in materials simulation, coding, and AI is advantageous. The role requires creative thinking, programming skills, and a broad understanding of materials' electronic structures and properties. The team values candidates who enjoy coding, analytics, and are eager to advance semiconductor technology. Additional valued skills include willingness to travel, teach, supervise, collaborate, and communicate scientific results.
The Materials Informatics Laboratory is a multicultural, interdisciplinary team that combines materials simulations and machine learning to develop innovative applications for future technologies, manufacturing, health, and climate. Team members work alongside experienced developers, participate in scientific meetings, help organize research workshops, and engage in academic and diversity outreach. The University of Turku supports career development through a wide range of courses and is recognized for its commitment to research excellence and researcher well-being.
The position starts on 1 January 2026 or as agreed, and lasts for 6 months until 30 June 2026. The salary is determined by the university's salary system for teaching and research staff, with starting salaries of approximately 3500 €/month for postdoctoral researchers, 2500–3100 €/month for project researchers, and 2200–2400 €/month for research assistants. There is a three-month probation period.
Applications must be submitted in English via the university's electronic application form by 26 November 2025 and should include a motivation letter, CV, degree certificates and transcripts, and contact details for at least two referees or reference letters. The position will be filled as soon as a suitable candidate is found. For more information, contact Professor Milica Todorović ([email protected]) or HR specialist Janna Salminen ([email protected]).
