About this position

The International Institute of Molecular Mechanisms and Machines (IMol) at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join the Membrane Machines Laboratory led by Dr Nicola De Franceschi. This fully funded, three-year position is part of the OPUS 29 project and focuses on investigating the emergence of proto-metabolism at the origin of life. The research employs a bottom-up approach to establish systems capable of generating membrane potentials and explores strategies to harness these potentials for driving (bio)chemical reactions.

IMol is a dynamic and international research institute, established in partnership with University Medical Center Göttingen and University of Warsaw. The institute offers state-of-the-art infrastructure, innovative training, and a collaborative, supportive work culture. The successful candidate will benefit from a competitive salary (ca. 9,700 PLN gross/month), medical care, social benefits, flexible working hours, and access to advanced research equipment.

The project is ideal for open-minded, creative, and hard-working scientists who wish to make a significant impact in the field of origin of life research. Key responsibilities include planning, performing, and analyzing experiments, presenting results at meetings and conferences, and preparing manuscripts for publication. The interdisciplinary nature of the project provides opportunities to gain unique professional experience and work at the interface of biology, biochemistry, and chemistry.

Eligibility requirements include a PhD degree in biology, biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry, or a related life sciences discipline, with the degree obtained not earlier than 2014 (extensions possible for maternity or other justified leaves). Excellent English communication skills are essential. Applicants should submit a cover letter, CV, list of publications, and contact details for two references. All documents must be in English.

Applications are accepted via the online form at this link. For informal queries, candidates may contact Dr Nicola De Franceschi at [email protected]. The application deadline is February 28, 2026, with the position starting on March 1, 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.
