This project, in collaboration with DarbyTech, JBA, and OLO-ROBOTICS, will address this gap by developing commercially viable educational kits and AI-driven robotic solutions. Expected outcomes include a quadruped robot trainer with intelligent sensing, customizable software interfaces, and sector-specific modules for industry, healthcare, and education.
The successful candidate will evaluate open-source hardware platforms, develop applications that integrate OLO-ROBOTICS with AI-driven behaviour, design sensor-driven control algorithms, and build VR modules for immersive training. Prototyping modular educational kits will allow end-users to deploy robots for complex scenarios, and candidates will participate in testing, validation, and dissemination of findings through publications and conferences. The project is embedded within the Tees Valley Investment Zone, a transformative initiative led by Teesside University to foster innovation and regional growth in digital and creative industries.
Applicants should have a good honours degree (2:1 or above) in robotics, computer science, electrical/electronic engineering, or related fields. A master’s degree is desirable but not essential. Candidates should demonstrate understanding of robotic systems, control algorithms, wireless sensor integration, and programming experience (Python, ROS), as well as familiarity with AI or machine learning frameworks. International applicants must meet English language, ATAS, and visa requirements.
The studentship covers tuition fees for up to four years and provides an annual tax-free stipend of £20,780 for three years, subject to satisfactory progress.
