The River and Catchment Modeling Lab, led by Assistant Professor Cheng-Wei Yu, invites applications for a PhD position to work on an exciting project exploring surface water–groundwater interactions and riverbed dust emissions under climate change scenarios. The lab is part of the Department of Bioenvironmental Systems Engineering at National Taiwan University.
Project Overview:
1) Evaluate Water-Resource Impacts: Assess interactions between surface water and groundwater under climate change scenarios using numerical models (SRH-2D and MODFLOW).
2) Predict Riverbed Dust Emissions: Use AI techniques to identify hazard, exposure, and vulnerability zones for dust emissions.
3) Enhance Sustainability: Propose strategies for improving water resource resilience and mitigating riverbed dust emissions under future climate scenarios.
Your Role - As a PhD student, you will:
* Develop and integrate hydrodynamic and groundwater models.
* Analyze historical data using AI techniques to predict potential dust emission zones.
* Contribute to interdisciplinary research addressing water and air quality challenges.
* Publish research findings in journals and present at conferences.

Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience in processing remote sensing data.
* Strong programming skills (e.g., MATLAB, Python, C++, or Fortran) and familiarity with GIS tools and open-source GIS-based libraries.
* Experience using AI-based tools for data analysis and modeling.
* Experience with numerical river models (e.g., HEC-RAS, SRH-2D), catchment hydrology models (e.g., SWAT, BASIN), and groundwater models (e.g., MODFLOW).
* Skills and knowledge in hydrological analysis, numerical methods, and statistical analysis.
* Strong interest in interdisciplinary research.
