About this position
Join our team! PhD position - radioactive organic materials immobilisation
?? New PhD project (for Sept 2026 start) in
SMASH (Sustainable Materials @ Sheffield)
!
?? Come work with us to designing cementitious wasteforms for retention of radioactive waste containing oils and organics.
?? Traditional Portland cement is often not compatible with organic contaminants. Geopolymers offer promise for encapsulating mixed wastes — contributing to safer nuclear decommissioning and support for clean energy and Net Zero ambitions.
?? This project aims to understand how oils and organic wastes interact with geopolymer cements, using advanced in-situ characterisation approaches, and design next generation wasteforms.
????? Training & Collaboration: You’ll join a multidisciplinary team, receive cohort-based training via the EPSRC SATURN CDT, giving you both depth and breadth of expertise, and benefit from industrial partnerships with United Kingdom National Nuclear Laboratory , Sellafield Ltd , and supervisory ties with the Paul Scherrer Institute
?? Funding & Benefits
- Full tuition + enhanced tax-free stipend (starting ~£21,383, with incremental increases)
- £46,500 research support & training grant over the 4-year period
- Opportunity for international visits, industry secondments, leadership training, and public engagement
