The Trinational PhD Programme on European Foundation Myths in Literature, Art, and Music is a unique doctoral opportunity jointly organised by the University of Bonn (Germany), the University of Florence (Italy), and Sorbonne University (France). This programme offers a joint doctoral degree and is designed for candidates interested in exploring the lasting effects of art, literary texts, and musical works on the shared history and cultural identity of Europe. The research focus is on analysing fictional and non-fictional texts, artworks, and musical compositions that have played a significant role in shaping European culture and identity.

Doctoral candidates will benefit from a highly international and interdisciplinary environment, with the possibility to write their dissertation in German, French, or Italian. The programme duration is six semesters, and students are required to spend at least one semester at each of the two partner universities, gaining exposure to diverse academic practices and research cultures. The course structure includes lectures, rolling seminars, small-group discussions, and participation in an 'Oberseminar' during the first two years. Each candidate is supervised by three academics, one from each university, and must report on their thesis progress each semester through oral presentations and written abstracts.

Language skills are integral to the programme, with candidates expected to be fluent in at least two of the three languages. If needed, language courses are available during the first and second years. The third year is dedicated to completing the thesis and preparing for the doctoral 'disputatio' (oral examination). The programme is supported by the Franco-German University (FGU), which provides funding opportunities for semesters spent abroad. Additionally, Bonn University awards two temporary scholarships per year. There are no tuition fees, but students must pay a semester contribution of approximately 330 EUR, which covers a transit pass and insurance.

Applicants must hold a degree in a relevant field (minimum five years of study) with at least the second best possible marks, as per the Bologna Accord or equivalent. They should demonstrate independent research capability and theoretical and methodological competence. The application process is open year-round, with no set deadline.
