PhD Position in Sustainable Physical Activity Interventions in Clinical Populations (MSCA Doctoral Network, SUPER)

Join the Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network, SUPER (Sustainable Sports and Physical Activity for Equity and Resilience), as a PhD Fellow at Universidad Europea de Madrid (UEM). This pioneering network offers 17 doctoral fellowships at the intersection of sustainability, sports science, and public health. The selected candidate will focus on implementing sustainable physical activity (PA) interventions in clinical populations and healthcare settings, with a special emphasis on co-creating green, health-enhancing PA promotion models for hospitals and primary care centres. The research project involves investigating current literature and conducting case studies to analyse health-enhancing PA practices in clinical populations, particularly from a carbon footprint perspective. The fellow will work collaboratively with patients and healthcare providers to develop and pilot a sustainable model for promoting environmentally friendly PA in clinical settings, including oncology. The project aims to assess the feasibility, effectiveness, and environmental impact of these interventions, contributing to both improved health outcomes and climate change mitigation. As a PhD Fellow, you will be expected to publish scientific articles, present findings at national and international conferences, and contribute to the broader SUPER project and educational activities within the consortium. The position offers secondment opportunities in industry and other European academic institutions, providing a rich, interdisciplinary training environment. Eligibility: Applicants must hold or be completing a Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Public Health, Sports Science, Environmental Science, Data Science, Health Sciences, Physiotherapy). Excellent English proficiency is required. Candidates should have foundational knowledge of health-enhancing physical activity, basic research skills, and a strong interest in interdisciplinary research at the intersection of physical activity, public health, and environmental sustainability. MSCA eligibility rules apply: no prior doctoral degree and limited prior residence in Spain. Funding: The position is fully funded for three years, with a monthly living allowance of approximately €3,833.56 (Spain estimate), a mobility allowance of €710, and a family allowance of €660 if applicable. All amounts are subject to tax and contributions. Tuition fees are waived. Funding is provided by the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network and the Swiss State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation. Application Process: Applications will open soon. Interested candidates should complete the diversity form and consult the Universidad Europea de Madrid website for full application details. Two information sessions will be held on March 23, 2026, to provide further guidance. For more information, contact Dr Borja del Pozo at [email protected]. This is an exceptional opportunity to contribute to innovative, sustainable health interventions and to develop as a researcher within a leading European doctoral network.
