PhD Position in Chemical and Biological Chemistry of Ferroptosis at Politechnika Łódzka

Politechnika Łódzka (Lodz University of Technology) is seeking a motivated PhD candidate to join the Institute of Polymer and Dye Technology, Faculty of Chemistry, for research on the project “Development of rigorous tools for identifying and elucidating the role of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species generated during ferroptosis.” This project, funded by the National Science Centre (NCN) under the SONATA 20 call, focuses on chemical biology approaches to study ferroptosis, a regulated cell death process involving lipid peroxidation and reactive species. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr. Eng. Aleksandra Grzelakowska, an Assistant Professor at Politechnika Łódzka. The research will involve developing and applying new chemical tools to identify oxidants involved in ferroptosis and to induce lipid peroxidation in specific cellular locations. The project combines organic and biological chemistry, spectroscopy, and advanced laboratory techniques. The candidate will be expected to actively participate in research, present results at seminars and conferences, document findings, contribute to scientific publications, and engage in organizational activities within the institute and faculty. Eligibility: Applicants must have a degree in chemistry, chemical technology, or a related field. Final-year master's students may apply if they provide a letter from their supervisor confirming graduation before the project start. Candidates must have or obtain doctoral student status at the Interdisciplinary Doctoral School of Politechnika Łódzka. Documented laboratory experience is required, as well as good knowledge and interest in organic and/or biological chemistry. English proficiency for reading scientific literature is necessary. Preferred qualifications include experience with spectroscopic methods, teamwork, motivation, creativity, and independence in research. Funding: The position offers a scientific scholarship of 5000 PLN per month (gross-gross), funded by the NCN Sonata 20 project. The scholarship is awarded according to NCN regulations. The expected start date is between May and October 2026. Application: Interested candidates should submit all required documents (personal questionnaire, data protection forms, CV, degree certificates or declaration, proof of application to the doctoral school, and at least one recommendation letter) in PDF format by email to [email protected] with the subject “Konkurs stypendysta-doktorant SONATA 20.” Applications are accepted on a rolling basis until 31 May 2026. Alternatively, documents can be sent by post to the address provided in the announcement. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview. This is an excellent opportunity for candidates interested in chemical biology, organic and biological chemistry, and the study of cell death mechanisms such as ferroptosis, to join a leading research group at Politechnika Łódzka and contribute to cutting-edge research funded by the National Science Centre, Poland.
