PhD Position in Computational Infection Genomics at Hannover Medical School

The Computational Virology group at the TWINCORE Centre for Experimental and Clinical Infection Research, a joint institution of the Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI) and Hannover Medical School (MHH), is offering a PhD position in Computational Infection Genomics. The group, led by Prof. Dr. Chris Lauber, is embedded in a vibrant scientific environment with opportunities for collaboration across MHH, CiiM, and HZI. The research focuses on developing genetic risk scores for severe infection with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), aiming to enable individualized risk stratification, prevention, and therapy. The project is part of the RESIST Cluster of Excellence and involves close collaboration with clinical and experimental groups. Applicants should have a strong background in computational biology, bioinformatics, statistics, computer science, or a related field. Essential skills include programming (Python, R), experience with large biological datasets, and an interest in human genetics, infection biology, and genomics. Experience with Linux/UNIX and version control (e.g., Git) is advantageous. Good English communication skills are required; German is a plus but not mandatory. Motivated candidates who do not meet all criteria but are eager to learn are encouraged to apply. The position is part-time (25.03 hours/week), initially limited to three years, and offers remuneration up to pay grade E 13 (TV-L), with public service benefits such as a company pension scheme and supplementary insurance through VBL. Additional benefits include professional development opportunities, excellent public transport connections, and a range of health and sports programs. The application deadline is 22 March 2026. To apply, submit a CV, a short motivation letter, a link to a code/software portfolio (e.g., GitHub), and contact details of two references. Reference number 3726 is required for the application.
