PhD and Postdoc Positions in Moralizing Politics, Political Theory, and Philosophy at University of Copenhagen

The Department of Political Science at the University of Copenhagen invites applications for one postdoctoral and two PhD positions as part of the ERC-funded project “Moralizing Politics: The Practice of Judging Others” (MoPo), led by Professor Christian F. Rostbøll. The project explores the role of moral judgment in contemporary politics, focusing on how practices such as cancel culture, climate shaming, and discourses around the dignity of work shape democratic accountability, polarization, and public deliberation. The research combines philosophical analysis with qualitative case studies, aiming to develop a normative theory of moralizing politics in democratic societies. The postdoctoral position centers on the theme of Climate Shaming, investigating how moralization in climate politics affects deliberative democracy and the ethical responsibilities toward both human and non-human others. The postdoc will conduct independent research, collaborate with team members, and may have teaching responsibilities. The position is for a minimum of three years, with a starting salary of DKK 39,200 per month plus pension, and includes funding for conferences and research visits. The two PhD scholarships focus on (1) The Dignity of Work: Social Value and Esteem, and (2) Cancel Culture: Human Equality and Respect. Both projects require candidates to formulate their own research within the MoPo framework, combining qualitative case studies with moral philosophy and democratic theory. The PhD program is offered as either a three-year (5+3) or four-year (4+4) track, with full salary or a combination of grants and salary, respectively. Funding is available for conferences, summer schools, and research visits, but PhD students are expected to seek additional funding for fieldwork. Applicants for the postdoc must hold a PhD in political science, practical/political philosophy, or a related field with a strong emphasis on political theory. For the PhD positions, a master’s degree in political science or practical/political philosophy (or equivalent) is required. All candidates must demonstrate research aptitude, academic writing skills, and a willingness to work both independently and collaboratively. Knowledge of qualitative methods and interest in democratic practice are desirable. Non-Danish degrees will be assessed for equivalence, and English proficiency is required for non-native speakers.
