PhD on Moduli of Curves and Abelian Varieties

This PhD position at Leiden University's Mathematical Institute is part of the ERC project 'Enumerative and Arithmetic Geometry of Logarithmic Curves,' supervised by Prof.dr. David Holmes. The research focuses on the moduli spaces of curves and abelian varieties, which are central objects in algebraic and arithmetic geometry. The project integrates various perspectives, including modular curves, Shimura varieties, and moduli spaces of flat structures, with applications in enumerative geometry (notably log Gromov-Witten theory and counting curves with tangency conditions) and arithmetic geometry (such as understanding rational points on abelian surfaces). The specific research direction for the PhD candidate will be tailored to their background, interests, and the project's progress at the time of joining. The candidate will join a vibrant and expanding group specializing in enumerative and logarithmic geometry, within a broader community at Leiden focused on algebra, geometry, and number theory. The institute offers a collaborative environment with local reading groups and participation in national and international algebraic geometry seminars, as well as opportunities to attend schools and workshops. The Mathematical Institute is internationally oriented and dedicated to advancing mathematical knowledge and its applications. The position offers a four-year contract, a competitive salary (€3059–€3881 gross per month), holiday and end-of-year bonuses, a pension scheme, full reimbursement of public transport commuting costs, flexible working hours, generous leave, and a laptop. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in mathematics with a strong background in algebraic geometry or number theory and demonstrate proficiency in English. The application requires a CV, Master’s transcripts, a completed application form (LaTeX required), an optional Master’s thesis, and a motivation letter. The deadline for applications is 4 January 2026. For more information, candidates can contact Prof.dr. David Holmes at holmesdst@math.leidenuniv.nl or visit the provided links for details about the institute and employment conditions.

3 year postdoc in moduli of curves and abelian varieties

Leiden University's Mathematical Institute invites applications for a 3-year postdoctoral position in the field of moduli of curves and abelian varieties, as part of the ERC project 'Enumerative and Arithmetic Geometry of Logarithmic Curves' led by Prof.dr. David Holmes. The project focuses on two main research directions: developing cohomological field theory (CohFT) structures for logarithmic Gromov-Witten invariants, and advancing the understanding of the geometry of moduli spaces of genus 2 curves and abelian surfaces, with applications to rational torsion points on abelian surfaces. A key aspect involves studying differential forms on moduli spaces with level structure. The position is open to candidates with expertise in any related area, including log geometry, modular and automorphic forms, moduli spaces, Gromov-Witten theory, classical modular curves, and integrable systems. The successful candidate will join an active and expanding group in enumerative and logarithmic geometry, within a larger research community specializing in algebra, geometry, and number theory. The Mathematical Institute offers a vibrant academic environment with regular reading groups and participation in national and international seminars. The Mathematical Institute is part of the Faculty of Science and is committed to advancing mathematical knowledge and promoting mathematical literacy. Research themes include Algebra, Geometry and Number Theory, Analysis and Dynamical Systems, Probability, Operations Research and Dynamics, and Statistics, with extensive collaboration across these areas. The institute values inclusivity, diversity, and personal development, providing a supportive and intellectually stimulating atmosphere. The postdoctoral appointment is full-time for three years (initially one year, extendable to three after a positive evaluation). The position offers a competitive salary (€3546–€5538 gross per month), holiday allowance (8%), end-of-year bonus (8.3%), pension scheme, full reimbursement of public transport commuting costs, flexible working hours, generous leave options, home-working allowance, and a university-provided laptop. The university is located in the historic city of Leiden, close to the city centre and The Hague. Applicants must hold a PhD in mathematics and demonstrate a strong publication record. To apply, submit a CV (including publications), a research statement outlining past and future work, a motivation letter explaining your fit for the project, and contact details for three referees. The application deadline is 07 December 2025. For enquiries, contact Prof.dr. David Holmes at holmesdst@math.leidenuniv.nl. For further details on the institute and employment conditions, visit the provided university links.
