PhD on Grid-Aware Flexibility Activation in Distribution Networks with Focus on Fairness

This PhD position at KU Leuven focuses on developing grid-aware flexibility activation strategies in distribution networks, with a strong emphasis on fairness, privacy, and market rules. The research is embedded within the ELECTA research group of the Department of Electrical Engineering (ESAT) and is part of the multi-disciplinary C2 FlexIQ project, offering collaboration with other departments and exposure to expertise in data governance and energy markets. The project aims to address the challenges posed by increased load and distributed generation uncertainty in distribution networks, which complicate reliable grid operation for distribution system operators (DSOs). The candidate will develop mathematical frameworks for centralized and decentralized flexibility activation, incorporating market, fairness, and privacy considerations, and will work on mitigating power quality issues using low-voltage resources. The ELECTA group is renowned for its research on smart grids, renewable energy integration, and reliable power systems, and is supported by a team of professors, senior researchers, postdocs, and about 50 PhD students. The primary workplace will be at EnergyVille in Genk, a leading center for sustainable energy and intelligent energy systems, providing access to state-of-the-art infrastructure and a vibrant international research environment. The ideal candidate holds a Master's degree in electrical engineering, energy engineering, computer science, mathematical engineering, or a related field, with skills in mathematical optimization, programming (preferably Julia or Python), and statistical analysis. Fluency in English is required, and prior research experience is a plus. The position is fully funded for four years and includes benefits such as health insurance and access to university facilities. The application deadline is April 30, 2026. For further information, applicants may contact Prof. dr. ir. Dirk Van Hertem or Mr. Md Umar Hashmi via email. KU Leuven is committed to diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunity, and provides a supportive environment for all researchers. The university is ranked among the top in Europe for research and innovation, making this an excellent opportunity for aspiring researchers interested in sustainable energy systems and advanced power network management.
