Fully Funded PhD Studentships in Nanoparticle-Reinforced Blade Coatings and Chemical Recycling of Thermoplastic Composites for Offshore Wind Energy

Two fully funded PhD studentships are available for an October 2026 start at Loughborough University, in partnership with the AURA Offshore Wind Energy Centre for Doctoral Training, Trelleborg, and Hive Composites. The research projects focus on advancing nanoparticle-reinforced blade coatings and developing next-generation recyclable thermoplastic composites, contributing to a more durable and sustainable future for offshore wind power. Project 1 investigates nanoparticle-reinforced coatings for leading edge protection of offshore wind turbine blades, aiming to enhance durability and resilience. Project 2 explores chemical recycling and life cycle assessment of thermoplastic composites for wind turbine blade manufacture, addressing the sustainability challenge of end-of-life blade management. The research integrates materials science, chemical engineering, polymer science, and environmental assessment, with a strong emphasis on circular economy principles. The successful applicants will join the EPSRC CDT in Offshore Wind Energy Sustainability and Resilience, a collaboration between Durham, Hull, Loughborough, and Sheffield universities. Initial training includes a six-month taught programme at the University of Hull, followed by research at Loughborough University. The studentship offers comprehensive professional development and networking opportunities across academia and industry. Entry requirements include a First-class Honours degree, or a 2:1 Honours degree and a Masters, or a Distinction at Masters level with any undergraduate degree (or international equivalents) in chemistry, materials science/engineering, polymer science/engineering, or chemical engineering. Applicants whose first language is not English must provide an IELTS score of 7.0 overall (minimum 6.0 in each skill). Scholarships are available for both Home (UK) and a limited number of international students, subject to EPSRC residence requirements. A guaranteed interview scheme is offered for eligible candidates from under-represented ethnic groups. Funding covers tuition fees and a stipend of £20,780 per annum at 2025/26 rates, with annual increases in line with EPSRC guidelines. The programme includes intensive training, CPD, and opportunities for industrial collaboration. Applications are open until 5 January 2026. Applicants should apply via the Loughborough University admissions system, quoting reference number AURA26-SSY, and submit transcripts, CV, a completed Supplementary Application Form, and a short video presentation.
