PhD Research Fellowship in Arabic

The University of Bergen invites applications for a PhD Research Fellowship in Arabic at the Department of Foreign Languages, commencing October 2026 or as agreed. This four-year, full-time position offers a unique opportunity to advance your expertise in Arabic studies, contribute to new knowledge, and participate in a stimulating academic environment. The department is renowned for its diverse language programs and strong research profile, with active collaborations in Middle Eastern history and Islamic studies. The PhD position is closely linked to the research group for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies and the Arabic section, focusing on projects related to the Arabian Peninsula and the western Indian Ocean, including the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea, preferably in the period 1500–1800. Candidates are encouraged to propose research utilizing legal or historiographical sources in Arabic. The department offers a vibrant academic community, with around 60 permanent staff, 20 PhD candidates and postdoctoral fellows, and extensive interdisciplinary collaboration. The fellowship aims to lead to the successful completion of a doctoral degree, qualifying graduates for independent research and academic roles. The position includes 2.5 years dedicated to doctoral research and one year for career-promoting activities such as teaching, research dissemination, and administrative tasks. PhD fellows will be admitted to the Faculty of Humanities’ PhD programme, which includes a training component of 30 ECTS. Applicants must hold a Norwegian master's degree or an equivalent foreign degree in Arabic, Middle Eastern, or Islamic Studies, with substantial work in Arabic-language material. Proficiency in both written and spoken English and Arabic is required. Candidates must submit a project proposal and progress plan, and applications are evaluated based on academic quality, feasibility, motivation, and personal suitability. Attachments must be in Norwegian, another Scandinavian language, or English, with certified translations for other languages. The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 568,700, with increases based on seniority, and membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, providing occupational pension, disability and survivor benefits, and access to favourable housing loans. The University of Bergen is committed to diversity and inclusivity, encouraging applicants from all backgrounds to apply. Applications must be submitted electronically via the provided link, including a description of research interests, CV, list of publications, language proficiency, and at least two referees. Required attachments include a project proposal, progress plan, transcripts, diplomas, summary of master's thesis, publication list, and relevant certificates. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an interview. For further information, contact Head of Department Martin Paulsen ([email protected]) or Associate Professor Eirik Hovden ([email protected]).
