PhD-position: Next-generation optomechanical sensing
This PhD position at AMOLF offers an exciting opportunity to work on next-generation optomechanical sensing in collaboration with the Photonic Forces group led by Prof. Ewold Verhagen and the QSTeM laboratory at TU Delft. The project focuses on developing novel mechanical resonator-based sensors with ultralow dissipation and quantum-limited optical measurement techniques, targeting applications in industrial process control, biomedicine, and inertial navigation. The research is highly interdisciplinary, bridging nano-engineering, optomechanics, quantum technology, and advanced sensor physics.
As a PhD student, you will be embedded in the vibrant Photonic Forces group at AMOLF, which investigates photon-phonon interactions in nanostructured devices and explores new methods to measure and control mechanical motion at the quantum level. The project is experimental in nature, involving conceptual design, modelling, nanofabrication in cleanroom environments, and high-precision optical interferometry. You will also have opportunities to present your work at international conferences and contribute to scientific publications.
The position is full-time for four years, with a starting salary of €2,968 gross per month and comprehensive employment benefits. AMOLF provides support for housing and visa applications for foreign PhD students, as well as compensation for transport and furnishing expenses. Upon successful completion, the PhD degree will be awarded by Eindhoven University of Technology. The institute fosters a collaborative, inclusive, and diverse work environment, with a strong emphasis on personal growth and professional development.
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in physics or engineering, with relevant experience in quantum optics, photonics, (nano)mechanics, or AMO physics. A motivation letter is required, and candidates from all backgrounds are encouraged to apply. The application deadline is January 3, 2026. For more information, visit
