PhD Position in Mathematical Statistics: Asymptotic Analysis and Nonparametric Modeling for Temporal Data

This PhD position at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) focuses on developing advanced mathematical statistics methods for the analysis of temporal data, with a particular emphasis on monitoring procedures for detecting structural breaks. These methods are crucial for timely and accurate event detection in technical fields such as power system protection and manufacturing plant maintenance, where distinguishing signal from noise and quantifying uncertainty are essential. The project centers on mathematical theory, leveraging asymptotic analysis and nonparametric modeling to enable rigorous uncertainty analysis and faster anomaly detection. The successful candidate will join the Statistics section at the Delft Institute of Applied Mathematics (DIAM), working under the supervision of Dr. Fabian Mies and Prof. G. Jongbloed. The research group is active in a broad spectrum of statistical theory and methodology, collaborating with other departments and industry partners. The department fosters informal knowledge exchange through seminars and social events, and TU Delft offers a vibrant interdisciplinary research environment addressing societal challenges such as climate change, energy transition, and artificial intelligence. As a PhD candidate, you will collaborate with experienced researchers, attend conferences, and contribute to education and possibly supervise bachelor and master students. Employment is for four years, split into two contracts (1.5 years and 2.5 years), with salary and benefits according to Dutch university standards, including holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, and a customisable compensation package.
