Postdoctoral Position in Development and Optical Control of 2D Ferroelectric Materials (Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics Group)

The Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) in Castelldefels, Barcelona, Spain, invites applications for up to two postdoctoral positions in the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics Group, led by Professor Frank Koppens. This opportunity is part of the EIC Pathfinder project 2DFERROPLEX, focusing on the development and optical control of two-dimensional ferroelectric materials for neuromorphic applications. Successful candidates will join a dynamic and interdisciplinary research environment, contributing to cutting-edge experimental work on 2D ferroelectric heterostructures. Key responsibilities include the development, preparation, and characterization of high-quality 2D ferroelectric materials (such as 3R-TMDs and layered ferroelectrics) using advanced exfoliation, stacking, and ultra-clean assembly techniques. The role involves optical and optoelectronic characterization of ferroelectric domains and excitonic properties, utilizing micro-photoluminescence, Raman spectroscopy, second harmonic generation (SHG), and near-field optical methods. Researchers will investigate ferroelectric domain structure, dynamics, and switching mechanisms at the nanoscale, including optical manipulation of polarization states. The position also includes designing and executing experiments to demonstrate optical control of ferroelectric polarization via exciton population engineering, with a focus on nonlinear optical responses relevant for neuromorphic activation functions. Collaboration with theory, modeling, and AI-assisted optimization activities within the consortium is expected, as well as reporting and dissemination of results. Applicants must hold a PhD degree (or have submitted their thesis by the starting date) in Physics, Materials Science, Nanotechnology, Electrical Engineering, or a closely related field. A strong background in condensed matter physics, nanophotonics, or 2D materials research is essential. Candidates should have proven post-graduate research experience in two-dimensional materials, ferroelectric materials, van der Waals heterostructures, or optoelectronic devices. Hands-on experience with optical spectroscopy techniques (photoluminescence, Raman, SHG) and/or nanoscale characterization tools (AFM, near-field optics, scanning probe methods) is required. Experience in low-dimensional material fabrication, cleanroom processing, or advanced sample preparation is highly desirable. The ability to independently design experiments, analyze complex datasets, and publish results in high-impact journals is expected. Excellent English language skills and the ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary and international research environment are required. ICFO offers a stimulating and supportive workplace, with contracts for a period of 3 years. Salaries are assigned by the Selection Committee and range from levels aligned with national Ramon-y-Cajal fellowships to those of Marie Skłodowska-Curie individual fellowships, depending on experience and responsibilities. A family allowance is available upon request and approval for eligible candidates. ICFO is an equal opportunity employer, committed to openness, efficiency, transparency, and international comparability. The application deadline is April 14, 2026. Interested candidates should apply online via the ICFO jobs portal. For further details, visit the official position page or contact ICFO directly.
