Postdoc in Large-Scale Modeling and Simulations of Mixed-Phase Clouds

The Department of Mechanics and Maritime Science at Chalmers University of Technology invites applications for a postdoctoral position in large-scale modeling and simulations of mixed-phase clouds. This interdisciplinary project is situated within the Fluid Dynamics division, which conducts research on turbulent flows, multiphase flows, aero-acoustics, and turbomachines using both computational and experimental methods. The division is part of several Chalmers initiatives, including Sustainable Transport, eScience, and Energy. The research project addresses one of the most urgent challenges in climate science: the accurate modeling of clouds, which are a major source of uncertainty in climate predictions. The project leverages Large-Eddy Simulations (LES) to study turbulent mixed-phase clouds, collaborating with the Geoscience and Remote Sensing division. The work is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the MIXCLOUDS project, aiming to advance knowledge on turbulence effects in mixed-phase clouds and improve subgrid models for LES simulations. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will be central to the development of the project, responsible for implementing, validating, and analyzing numerical tools. You will be expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate research results in scientific journals and at international conferences. The position offers a dynamic and inspiring working environment in Gothenburg, Sweden, with access to employee benefits such as parental leave, subsidized day care, free schools, and healthcare. Chalmers is committed to gender equality and offers Swedish language courses for international staff. Eligibility requirements include a doctoral degree (or equivalent foreign degree) in Mechanical Engineering, Naval/Maritime Engineering, Meteorology, Atmospheric Physics, Chemical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Aeronautics, or a relevant PhD program. The degree must be obtained by the time of employment. Strong written and verbal English skills are required, and teaching and research experience is expected. Preference is given to candidates who completed their doctoral degree within the last three years. A valid residence permit is required by the start date. The position is a full-time, temporary employment for two years, with the possibility of a one-year extension. Applications must be submitted in English as PDF files via the online application form. Incomplete applications and those sent by email will not be considered. Contact details for references will be requested after the interview. The application deadline is 22 February 2026. For further information, contact Professor Gaetano Sardina ([email protected]). For application details and to apply, visit the Chalmers job portal.
