The University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) invites applications for PhD positions in the Faculty of Humanities, Sports, and Educational Sciences, with a start date in spring 2026 and no later than August 2026. These positions are designed for motivated candidates with innovative research ideas in the fields of humanities, culture, and educational sciences, offering a vibrant academic and social environment across multiple campuses in Norway. The interdisciplinary PhD program is organized into three main scientific areas: (1) Language, Literature, and History, focusing on linguistics, specific language subjects (such as English, Norwegian, and Spanish), literary studies, and history; (2) Cultural Studies, Arts, and Sports, emphasizing cultural analysis, aesthetic practices, anthropology, sociology, history, philosophy, and art-based research; and (3) Educational Research, Learning Practices, and Pedagogy, covering pedagogy, professional learning, education policy, career guidance, formal and informal learning, and technology in education. Each area offers three positions, providing a solid foundation for interdisciplinary knowledge development and future-oriented research. PhD fellows will participate in relevant coursework, research seminars, independent thesis work, national and international research communities, dissemination activities, and public defense. The program also offers opportunities to join USN’s research schools and research groups. Employment is for three years (research training) or four years with 25% career-promoting duties, depending on agreement with the Head of Department. Regular presence at the workplace is required, and the place of work will be agreed upon appointment. Applicants must submit a five-page project proposal clearly indicating the relevant scientific area and intended research group affiliation. Contact with research group leaders is encouraged for guidance during application preparation. The application should also include certified degree certificates, grading system explanation, master's thesis, other relevant diplomas, documentation of language skills, scientific publications, and references. All documents must be in Scandinavian or English and certified. Applicants with foreign degrees must have their education approved by the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Competence before the deadline. Qualification requirements include a master’s degree (120 ECTS credits or equivalent) with a thesis of at least 30 credits, normally with an average grade of B or better. English fluency must be documented (TOEFL IBT min. 90, IELTS min. 6.5, CAE/CPE, or PTE Academic min. 62), unless exempted by prior study or degree. Norwegian or Scandinavian language proficiency is not required unless relevant for the project. Candidates should demonstrate motivation and potential for research, ability to work independently and in teams, structured work habits, and professional and personal qualifications to complete the doctoral program within the employment period. Funding includes a salary according to the State salary scale for research fellows (position code 1017), NOK 550,800 per year, with statutory contributions to the State Pension Fund and membership in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund, ensuring good pension, insurance, and loan schemes. The university offers research training, career guidance, an inclusive work environment, and opportunities to take Norwegian courses. Applications are evaluated by an expert committee based on project plan and qualifications. Relevant candidates will be invited to interview, and references will be obtained. Appointments are made in accordance with the Civil Service Act and relevant legislation. USN is Charter & Code certified by the European Commission and a member of the EURAXESS network, promoting good working conditions for mobile researchers.
