Literacy and Psychology in Education

A fully funded PhD studentship is available at the University of Birmingham, in partnership with the National Literacy Trust, to investigate personal, social, and environmental factors influencing adolescents’ and young adults’ reading behaviours and motivations. The project aims to develop a psychometrically sound tool to characterise reading behaviours and motivations, considering individual differences such as gender, ethnicity, special educational needs, reading ability, social motivations, and environmental factors like socioeconomic circumstances and access to reading resources. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team led by Prof Helen Breadmore (School of Education), Dr Sanne van der Kleij (School of Psychology), Dr Christina Clark, and Irene Picton (National Literacy Trust). The studentship includes tuition fees, a maintenance stipend, research training support, and research activity grants, with opportunities for placements at the National Literacy Trust to gain experience in public and policy engagement. Applicants should hold a first class or 2:1 degree in Psychology, Education, or related fields; a Masters degree and experience with young people and quantitative research are desirable. Skills in communication, teamwork, project management, and advanced statistical modelling are valued. The application deadline is 5 March 2025. Interested candidates should apply via the provided link and may contact Prof Helen Breadmore or Dr Sanne van der Kleij for informal enquiries.
