PhD Position in Healthcare Operations: Hospital-at-Home Optimization and Data-Driven Planning

The Technical University of Denmark (DTU) is offering a 3-year PhD position in Healthcare Operations, focusing on the optimization and data-driven planning of Hospital-at-Home (HaH) systems. This opportunity is based within the Department of Technology, Management, and Economics (DTU Management), specifically the Management Science Division, and is part of a joint research project with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). The project aims to analyze and optimize HaH concepts, addressing challenges such as long distances to specialist care and high no-show rates, with a particular emphasis on elderly care in rural areas. By integrating primary and specialist care through advanced data-driven planning, the research seeks to contribute to the development of sustainable, resilient, and efficient healthcare systems. The PhD student will employ methodologies from Operations Research, Management Science, Data Science, and Analytics to develop and test planning and optimization models for innovative HaH systems. The goal is to improve healthcare access for elderly and vulnerable citizens. The position offers a dynamic, interdisciplinary research environment at one of Europe’s leading technical universities, located in Copenhagen—a city renowned for its quality of life and vibrant cultural scene. Key responsibilities include conducting independent research, publishing in leading journals, collaborating with academics and healthcare professionals, presenting at international conferences, and assisting in teaching and co-supervising engineering students. The PhD project is jointly supervised by Professor Allan Larsen, Professor Jens O. Brunner (DTU), Professor Henrik Andersson, and Associate Professor Anders Gulhav (NTNU). Regular visits to NTNU in Trondheim, Norway, are expected as part of the collaboration. Applicants should possess a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or equivalent, with strong knowledge in Operations Research, Management Science, Analytics, and Data Science, as well as practical programming experience (Python, Java, Julia, etc.). The position is a full-time PhD scholarship with a highly competitive salary, minimal teaching duties, and is subject to academic approval and enrolment in a DTU PhD programme. The starting date is January 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter, with a preferred start of 1 March 2026. DTU is committed to innovation, societal impact, and diversity, and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds. The university offers an inclusive, international working environment and supports relocation through monthly seminars for incoming PhD students. For further information, contact Professor Allan Larsen at [email protected] or visit DTU Management . To apply, submit your complete application online by 19 December 2025, including a cover letter, CV, transcripts, diploma, grading scale description, a short introductory video, and a research statement. Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
