Postdoc position in machine learning models for soil health prediction

The Agrobiology and Soil Management Group at the University of Barcelona is recruiting for a 12-month, part-time postdoctoral position focused on developing and validating machine learning models to predict soil health and crop performance. The successful candidate will work with complex datasets integrating biochemical and molecular soil parameters, especially microbiome features derived from metabarcoding and metagenomics, alongside agronomic traits from horticultural field trials involving organic amendments. Key responsibilities include building and applying machine learning models to heterogeneous datasets, collaborating with researchers for data interpretation and curation, drafting manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, contributing to grant proposals, and exploring opportunities for innovation based on modelling outcomes. The postdoc will actively participate in group meetings and joint projects within the Agrobiology and Soil Management Group, which is part of the Nutrition and Food Safety Research Institute (INSA). The position is led by Dr. Pierre Hohmann (PI) and Dr. Joan Romanyà (Group Leader). Applicants must have a PhD in Agricultural Sciences, Soil Science, Bioinformatics, Biostatistics, or related disciplines, with demonstrated expertise in machine learning and microbiome profiling. Experience in soil health, organic amendments, or crop productivity, as well as a strong publication record, is required. Fluency in English is essential, and knowledge of Spanish and Catalan is advantageous. The contract is part-time (18.75 hours/week, 0.5 FTE) for 12 months, with possible extension if additional funding is secured. The work environment is collaborative and supportive, offering opportunities for professional growth and engagement in impactful projects aimed at advancing sustainable agriculture. Applications must include an application form, full CV, and motivation letter, and priority will be given to candidates with disabilities. The application deadline is November 24, 2025, and the selected candidate must accept the offer within three working days of notification.
