1-2 Doctoral Researchers in Medical Artificial Intelligence (AI)

The University of Turku’s Faculty of Technology, Department of Computing, is offering 1-2 fully funded doctoral researcher positions in the field of medical artificial intelligence (AI). These four-year positions are affiliated with the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS) Institute Finland, providing a highly interdisciplinary and internationally connected research environment. The successful candidates will join a research group led by ELLIS Principal Investigator, Associate Professor Kimmo Kartasalo, and contribute to the development and implementation of precision medicine approaches and medical AI for improving diagnostics and treatment of cancer and other diseases with significant societal impact. Key responsibilities include designing, developing, and implementing novel computational approaches for robust, explainable, and fair medical AI. The role involves close collaboration with group members and national/international academic and industry partners, presenting research results in scientific publications and at international conferences, and contributing to the supervision of MSc and BSc students. Candidates will also engage in training opportunities covering grant writing, scientific publishing, intellectual property, entrepreneurship, and other activities supporting career development. Applicants must hold an MSc degree in bioinformatics, biomedical engineering, computer science, image/signal processing, machine learning, statistics, or related fields. Demonstrated expertise in ML/AI is required, with prior experience in healthcare applications considered a strong merit. Experience in medical image and omics data analysis is advantageous. Strong programming and software development skills, familiarity with relevant ML/AI frameworks, excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, and good communication skills in English (written and spoken) are required. International experience and collaborative research with academia and industry are considered merits. Eligibility criteria are defined by the University of Turku’s rules of procedure. Applicants must have the right to pursue a doctoral degree at the University of Turku and demonstrate the ability to undertake postgraduate studies and complete a doctoral degree according to the research plan. In exceptional cases, candidates who have nearly completed a master's degree may be considered. The position offers a four-year fully funded PhD opportunity, with a starting salary for doctoral/project researchers (OV02-OV04) averaging 2600-2700 euros/month, depending on experience and skills. Research Assistant starting salary (OV1) is on average 2400 euros/month.
