PhD position in numerical and experimental studies of non-spherical and deformable granular systems

ETH Zürich, one of the world's leading universities in science and technology, offers a PhD position in numerical and experimental studies of non-spherical and deformable granular systems. The position is based in the Laboratory of Energy Science and Engineering (D-MAVT), which actively develops advanced tools to probe single- and multiphase granular systems. Granular systems are fundamental to both nature and industry, yet many phenomena such as segregation, surface instabilities, and jamming remain poorly understood. This project specifically investigates how particle deformability and non-sphericity influence the dynamics and rheology of granular systems, with a focus on complex behaviors like transient jamming and stress-induced orientational ordering. The PhD position is part of a collaborative project between the Laboratory of Energy Science and Engineering (Prof. Christoph Müller) and the Institute for Biomedical Imaging Magnetic Resonance Technology (Prof. Klaas Prüssmann). Daily collaboration between PhD students in both groups is expected. The main objectives for the PhD student include advancing numerical tools for modeling non-spherical and deformable granular systems, establishing camera-based experimental techniques such as photo-elasticimetry to determine contact forces and stress fields, and developing machine-learning models to correlate particle deformation and contact forces in 3D systems. Applicants should hold a very good MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or related disciplines. Experience in numerical modeling or imaging techniques is desirable. The ideal candidate is highly motivated, committed, creative, able to work in a team, and possesses excellent communication skills in English.
