PhD Position in Shape Memory Alloy Z-pin Reinforced FRP Composites at Empa/ETH Zurich

Empa, a research institution of the ETH Domain in Switzerland, is offering a fully funded PhD position in the development and mechanics of shape memory alloy (SMA) Z-pin reinforced fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. The position is based in the Structural Engineering Laboratory within the Advanced Structural Materials and Systems (ASMS) research group, in collaboration with ETH Zurich. The four-year project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), aims to explore innovative applications of shape memory alloys for interlaminar reinforcement of laminated FRPs using prestressed Z-pins. The research will focus on the design and manufacturing of SMA Z-pinned FRPs, SMA activation and micromechanical modeling, progressive damage modeling of reinforced FRPs, and mechanical characterization and fracture experiments. The successful candidate will complete a PhD thesis at ETH Zurich under joint supervision by Empa and ETH Zurich, with Prof. Dr. Moslem Shahverdi as the main scientific group leader. Applicants should have a Master’s degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline, with a strong background in mechanics of materials, finite element analysis, fracture mechanics, and/or SMA reinforcements. Practical experience with FRP manufacturing and mechanical experiments is highly desirable. Excellent communication skills and fluency in English are required; knowledge of German is an asset. The position offers access to state-of-the-art experimental and computational infrastructure, a collegial working atmosphere, and competitive salary and social benefits. Empa values inclusion and respect, welcoming all interested candidates. The application deadline is August 1, 2026, with the position starting by mutual agreement, no later than this date. To apply, candidates must submit a complete online application via the Empa job portal, including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas, and contact details of two reference persons. Applications by e-mail or post will not be considered. For further information, candidates may contact Prof. Dr. Moslem Shahverdi. For more details and to apply, visit the provided links.
