Fully Funded PhD in Healthcare Operations, Data Analytics, and Management at University of Hull

The University of Hull is offering a fully funded PhD scholarship focused on improving operational effectiveness, efficiency, and patient outcomes in UK NHS Accident & Emergency (A&E) departments. This opportunity is part of the ESRC White Rose Doctoral Training Partnership (WRDTP), which brings together several leading UK universities to support high-quality social science research. The successful candidate will work directly with NHS A&E stakeholders, addressing real-world healthcare system challenges and applying advanced research methods to enhance performance and service delivery. The project aims to develop impactful research that can improve patient flow, reduce waiting times, optimise resource allocation, and support evidence-based policy decisions. Key research areas include healthcare operations, data analytics, digital transformation, AI, systems improvement, and management. The project will use qualitative case studies, including interviews and observations, to build a practice-grounded framework for improving diagnosis in pressured emergency department environments. The research will also explore how culture, collective sensemaking, and teamwork contribute to sustainable diagnostic improvement and patient safety. Applicants should have a strong academic background, ideally with a good honours degree (first or upper second) in a relevant field or equivalent international qualification or experience. The ESRC recognises degrees as social science if at least 50% of taught modules fall within an ESRC subject area. The scholarship is open to both UK and international students, though international awards are capped at 30% by the ESRC. The award covers a £21,805 annual stipend (increasing with UKRI rates), full tuition fees, and research-related costs. All scholarships include a compulsory three-month fully funded ‘Research in Practice’ placement. To apply, candidates should choose the PhD Management programme (full-time or part-time) at the University of Hull, select White Rose as the funding source, and upload the WRDTP scholarships application form instead of a research proposal. Required documents include transcripts and a personal statement. The application deadline is 9 March 2026, and shortlisted applicants will be invited for an online interview. For further details, visit the University of Hull's funded opportunities page or contact the Doctoral College at [email protected]. This PhD is ideal for candidates passionate about healthcare operations, data analytics, digital transformation, and making a real impact on UK healthcare. The research will be conducted in collaboration with Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and will contribute to the transformation of emergency care in the UK.
