Postdoctoral Fellowship in Hydrodynamics and Thermal Multiphysics at Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur

The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) is inviting applications for its Institute Post-Doctoral Fellowships (IPDF) in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, specifically within the Hydrodynamics and Thermal Multiphysics Lab (HTML). This rolling advertisement is open until the end of 2026, offering a unique opportunity for motivated postdoctoral researchers to join a curiosity-driven research group focused on fundamental and applied aspects of fluid dynamics and thermal sciences. The HTML group, led by Associate Professor Purbarun Dhar, specializes in micro-nano-fluidics, phase change transport phenomena, droplets, bubbles, sprays, jets, films, surface and interfacial phenomena, soft matter, rheology, viscoelasticity, and complex fluids. The lab combines experimental and theoretical approaches, including CFD, to advance knowledge in fluid-thermal sciences and mechanics in both natural and engineered systems. Research topics also include electromagnetism and chemical reactions in fluid-thermal contexts, with a strong emphasis on curiosity-driven and popular-science inspired investigations. Eligible candidates must hold a Ph.D. with first class or equivalent in a relevant branch and have at least two SCI journal publications based on their Ph.D. work. Applicants should be under 35 years of age at the time of application, with age relaxations for reserved categories as per government norms. Fresh Ph.D. graduates from IIT Kharagpur are discouraged from applying. The fellowship offers a monthly stipend of INR 80,000, 90,000, or 100,000 depending on experience and performance, plus a contingency grant of INR 50,000 per annum. The tenure is up to three years, subject to annual performance reviews. HRA is provided if on-campus accommodation is unavailable, and financial support for attending conferences is available. Interested candidates should apply online via the ERP portal, uploading all required documents. For mentorship opportunities within the HTML group, applicants are encouraged to email Prof. Purbarun Dhar with their CV and research interests. The lab welcomes scholars passionate about hydrodynamics, thermal multiphysics, and related fields. For more information, visit the HTML group webpage and the official application portal.
