PhD in Meta-optics based Optomechanics

ETH Zürich invites applications for a PhD position in Meta-optics based Optomechanics within the Nanophotonic Systems Laboratory (NSL). This project is situated at the intersection of meta-optics and optomechanics, leveraging recent advances in the control of light-matter interactions to explore new frontiers in both fundamental physics and technological innovation. The research aims to exploit engineered electromagnetic modes in metasurfaces to precisely control optical forces and the resulting mechanical responses, opening up opportunities for unprecedented effects and applications. The successful candidate will be involved in all stages of the research process, from conceptualizing and designing optomechanical metasurfaces using numerical simulations, to their nanofabrication in a cleanroom environment, and finally to the experimental characterization of their optomechanical properties. The project offers exposure to a wide range of technologies, including nanofabrication, optics, lasers, data analysis, vacuum technology, and advanced simulation techniques. Applicants should be passionate about innovative research, motivated, creative, and able to communicate clearly. Teamwork and respect for diversity are highly valued in this international and interdisciplinary group. While prior experience in nanofabrication, nano- and meta-optics, optomechanics, vacuum technology, or programming for experiment control is advantageous, it is not strictly required. A relevant background in physics, engineering, or a related discipline is expected. ETH Zürich is renowned for its excellence in science and technology, offering a vibrant, diverse, and inclusive environment. The university is committed to equality of opportunity and sustainability, fostering a climate where all staff and students can thrive. The NSL group has a strong track record of pioneering contributions to optomechanics and provides a stimulating setting for doctoral research. To apply, candidates must submit an updated CV and a motivation letter via the ETH Zürich online application portal. Applications sent by email or post will not be considered. For further details about the group, visit the NSL website. Questions regarding the position can be directed to Prof. Romain Quidant ([email protected]) or Dr. Nadine Meyer ([email protected]). ETH Zürich is located in Zurich, Switzerland, and is one of the world’s leading universities in science and technology, with a community of over 30,000 people from more than 120 countries. The university is dedicated to advancing knowledge and developing solutions for global challenges.
