PhD Thesis in Optical Fiber Sensing, Signal Processing and Artificial Intelligence

This PhD position at CNRS, hosted by Bretagne INP - ENIB / Lab-STICC in Brest, France, offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the detection and recognition of acoustic signals using distributed fiber-optic sensors and coherent reception. The project, acronym TRACE, is situated within Lab-STICC, a leading multidisciplinary research laboratory specializing in signal processing, telecommunications, computer science, and applied physics. Lab-STICC provides a collaborative and stimulating environment, engaging with academic, industrial, and institutional partners to foster high-level research and innovation. The research focuses on optical fiber sensing systems, which utilize the fiber’s sensitivity to environmental disturbances to detect, locate, and characterize acoustic events. These systems function as distributed networks of acoustic sensors, offering adjustable spatial and temporal resolution. However, their ability to intercept acoustic signals also introduces cybersecurity vulnerabilities, making it crucial to develop protective measures alongside technological advancements. The PhD project aims to analyze and optimize fiber-optic sensing systems for acoustic monitoring, with particular emphasis on sensitivity, frequency response, and signal-to-noise ratio. The innovative aspect of the research lies in integrating advanced telecommunications techniques and artificial intelligence to distinguish signals in complex environments. A comprehensive study of optical components will identify technological levers to enhance the precision and robustness of signal processing algorithms. Key technical challenges include optimizing waveforms to improve sensitivity and resolution, mitigating noise and interference in dynamic environments, and addressing signal degradation phenomena such as Rayleigh fading and nonlinear effects. The project will explore novel waveform design, coherent detection architectures, reflector insertion to boost signal strength, advanced signal processing, and AI-driven adaptive analysis. Ensuring compatibility with existing infrastructure is also a priority. Funding for the position is partially secured: 50% is provided by CREACH LABS, a Brittany-based collaborative cybersecurity research hub, with the remaining 50% being finalized with identified partners. Selected candidates will receive regular updates on funding progress. Applicants should possess a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Signal Processing, Telecommunications, or Optics, with a strong background in signal processing, digital communications, telecommunications, or optoelectronics. Knowledge of AI and machine learning techniques, proficiency in programming (especially Python or Matlab), and a keen interest in experimental work are required. The selection process involves submitting a CV, cover letter, academic transcripts, and letters of recommendation. Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview. Applications should be sent to Prof. Stéphane Azou at [email protected]. The application deadline is April 3, 2026, and the position is expected to start on October 1, 2026.
