Environmental Communication for Whales, Dolphins, and Restorative Futures

This is a fully funded PhD opportunity at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, supervised by Professor Tema Milstein. The position is part of a research project titled 'Environmental Communication for Whales, Dolphins, and Restorative Futures,' which investigates the ecocultural discourse dimensions of whale and dolphin watching to advance sustainability awareness in Australia and globally. The successful candidate will conduct ecocultural discourse research primarily around whale watching in Sydney, contribute to the broader research project, and develop a thesis aligned with the project's aims. The position offers training, mentorship, and collaborative research activities, including literature reviews, field data collection (land and boat-based), analysis, and writing. The PhD student will join a small, passionate cohort within the supportive Environment & Society Group in the School of Humanities & Languages at UNSW, a university consistently ranked among the world's top 20. The opportunity is open to both domestic and international students, as well as current PhD students interested in transferring to UNSW. The position is full-time (35 hours/week), with no required coursework or teaching duties. Sydney offers a high quality of life, diverse culture, and proximity to national parks and whale migration routes. Funding includes a stipend of AUD$37,684 per year and full tuition waiver for four years. Applications are encouraged by 8 September 2025, but the call will remain open until filled. Interested candidates should contact Professor Tema Milstein for the full advertisement and application criteria.
